Looking Back

First inhabited by the Coast Salish First Nations, followed by adventuring pioneers and eventually settlers – who named the area Whistler after the shrill whistle of the hoary marmot. In 1914, Myrtle and Alex Phillip opened the first visitor accommodation on the shores of Alta Lake, Rainbow Lodge. The area was made accessible by the building of the Pacific Great Eastern Railway in the same year.

The opening of Whistler Mountain in 1966, followed by the opening of Blackcomb Mountain in 1980 escalated the draw of national and international outdoor sports enthusiasts. In 1992, the prestigious Snow Country Magazine recognized Whistler as the #1 Ski Resort in North America, an accolade that Whistler continues to receive year after year.

In 2008, construction of the world’s longest unsupported lift, the Peak 2 Peak Gondola, linked the summits of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains. A breathtaking traverse that takes a mere 11 minutes.

As the site of the Alpine and Nordic venues for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, Whistler’s stunning landscapes and facilities were proudly broadcasted to the world.  Residents and visitors continue to enjoy the improvements undertaken to host this extraordinary international event; the Sea-to-Sky Highway was substantially upgraded, new competitive venues were added, the Whistler Olympic Plaza and the Athlete’s Village housing complex were built.

In 2016, Whistler Blackcomb was acquired by Vail Resorts, Inc., a publicly traded company that holds 37 mountain resorts around the world. Vail Resorts, Inc. is committed to a vision for the future of Whistler Blackcomb that includes ongoing enhancements of existing facilities.

Looking Forward

Whistler is committed to a future of sustainability, which includes ongoing enhancements of existing facilities. New construction must meet stringent codes for energy efficiency and land use management measures are in place to protect the natural environment and beauty of the landscape for generations to come.

As a mountain resort Whistler Blackcomb has long held the prestige as the #1 Ski Resort in North America and is positioned to be the #1 Year-Round Resort in North America and beyond.
